Universal Robots Unveils Effortless Compatibility with Siemens PLCs

Universal Robots (UR), a leading provider of collaborative robot (cobot) solutions, has recently incorporated the Standard Robot Command Interface (SRCI) into its software platform. UR takes pride in being one of the pioneering cobot manufacturers to introduce this feature. SRCI represents a fresh standard in the robotics industry, aimed at establishing a unified interface between Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and robots. This seamless integration of SRCI into UR’s software suite will significantly enhance the connectivity capabilities of UR’s cobots, ensuring customers enjoy a smooth integration experience with Siemens PLCs, as Siemens stands as the primary supporter of SRCI within the automation sector.

Daniel Friedman, Global Director of Strategic Partnerships at Universal Robots, expresses, “By enabling our robots to seamlessly connect with an industry leader like Siemens, we can provide our partners and customers, both current and prospective, with faster integration and greater user-friendliness. Our goal is to simplify cobot automation for everyone, everywhere.”

The standardized cross-manufacturer data interface offered by SRCI promotes interoperability in robot implementation, streamlining the definitions and commands exchanged between UR cobots and Siemens PLCs. This simplification facilitates quicker setup and deployment of UR robots within both existing and new Siemens ecosystem-based production lines.

Rolf Heinsohn, Vice President of Factory Automation Segment Control at Siemens, remarks, “We are excited that Universal Robots’ cobots are now compatible with SRCI and can be programmed by Simatic users. Our aim is to expedite factory automation and broaden the utilization of robots across industries by ensuring simplicity and accessibility for all our customers’ employees. The ease of integrating and utilizing UR’s robots alongside Siemens PLCs in production processes presents a significant advantage for our customers.”

SRCI compatibility is currently accessible for UR’s e-Series family and the next-generation robots UR20 and UR30. Users can install and activate SRCI with PolyScope version 5.15 or higher through the add-on URcap software.
