Knot 2023 Study 75% of Couples Prioritize Guest Experience in Wedding Planning

The Knot, a prominent digital wedding planning authority and the largest Vendor Marketplace in the US, has recently unveiled The Knot 2023 Real Weddings Study, a comprehensive analysis based on the experiences of nearly 10,000 couples married in 2023. This study not only delves into the evolving landscape of wedding celebrations but also offers insights into the trends that engaged couples are embracing for their 2024 nuptials.

In 2023, couples, on average, enlisted the services of 14 vendors for their wedding day, with the dress, venue, and photographer ranking as the top three priorities. Interestingly, 25% of proposers now hire photographers and additional professionals to curate the perfect ambiance for their proposal—an increase that has more than doubled since 2019. The study also highlights a growing trend of couples seeking niche vendors, with 45% opting for businesses ranging from small enterprises to those owned by women, Black individuals, or members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The emphasis on the guest experience is a notable trend, with 75% of couples considering it the most crucial aspect of the planning process. This figure rises to 80% among couples with over 100 guests. The study reveals that weddings are becoming more experiential, with couples redefining traditions and incorporating unique elements inspired by pop culture.

In terms of trends, Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love” has claimed the title of the most popular first dance song, overtaking Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” which held the spot for six years. Other in-demand trends include first looks, save-the-date and invitation QR codes, and kid-free receptions.

Looking towards 2024, the study anticipates September 21, 2024, as the most popular wedding date, continuing the trend from the previous year. October remains the favored month for weddings, followed closely by September. Couples are drawing inspiration from cultural moments and popular trends, with Taylor Swift, Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter, and even the dance scene from the Barbie movie influencing wedding choices.

While classic wedding colors such as white, gold, and champagne continue to be popular, couples are leaning towards more unique colors like green and blue. A significant 95% of couples emphasize the importance of authenticity and personalization in their weddings.

Wedding professionals emerge as unsung heroes in the evolving landscape, offering essential support to couples navigating challenges such as budgeting and guest lists. The study notes a 7% year-over-year increase in couples relying on wedding planners, particularly for budget-related assistance. With an average engagement length of 15 months, couples spend an average of seven hours per week planning, primarily online.

As the wedding industry undergoes a transformation, driven in part by the values and priorities reassessed during the pandemic, The Knot anticipates a golden age of marriage. Tim Chi, CEO at The Knot Worldwide, notes that couples are doubling down on the guest experience, reimagining traditions, and advocating for inclusivity. The positive trends suggest that the industry is poised for growth, with a continued focus on creating authentic and personalized wedding experiences.
