BASF and Inditex Revolutionize Textile Recycling: Introducing Loopamid, a Circular Nylon 6 from Textile Waste

The Launch of Loopamid: Today, BASF and Inditex announce the global availability of loopamid, showcasing its potential to transform the textile industry. Zara, a flagship brand under Inditex, leads the way by introducing a jacket made from 100 percent loopamid. This breakthrough material is designed following a “design for recycling” approach, where every component, from fabrics and buttons to filling, hook and loop, and zipper, is crafted entirely from loopamid.

Innovative Circularity in Fashion: Loopamid represents an innovative solution to enhance circularity in the fashion industry, enabling the recycling of polyamide 6 textile waste. The cutting-edge technology behind loopamid accommodates various fabric mixtures, allowing for the textile-to-textile recycling of both post-industrial and post-consumer textile waste. Notably, loopamid’s fibers and materials can undergo multiple recycling cycles while maintaining characteristics identical to conventional virgin polyamide.

Testimonial from BASF: Dr. Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF’s Monomers division, expresses the significance of this achievement: “BASF has reached an important milestone towards circularity in the fashion industry and pioneered an approach to close the loop for nylon textiles. Our loopamid has the potential to revolutionize the PA6 market for the better.”

Collaborative Efforts: Inditex has collaborated with leading clothing manufacturing groups to seamlessly integrate loopamid into various garment components. The ModaRe take-back program, operated by Caritas, provided discarded textiles as feedstock. RadiciGroup from Italy transformed loopamid polymer into various yarn types, while companies like YKK, Velcro Companies, Uniter, Tessitura Vignetta, and Freudenberg and Gütermann played crucial roles in utilizing loopamid for creating plastic components, inner labels, fabrics, filling materials, and sewing threads.

Inditex’s Commitment to Sustainability: Javier Losada, Inditex’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasizes the importance of innovation in driving a more responsible industry. He states, “This collaboration is a great example of how, by collaborating all together, we can use the new technology to transform textile waste into a new resource.”

Sustainable Goals and Future Aspirations: Both BASF and Inditex are committed to ambitious sustainability goals. By 2030, BASF aims to double its sales generated with circular economy solutions to €17 billion, focusing on circular feedstocks, new material cycles, and new business models. Inditex aims to have 100% of its textile products made exclusively from environmentally friendly materials by 2030.

Conclusion: The collaboration between BASF and Inditex sets a new standard in textile recycling, showcasing how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. Loopamid stands as a testament to the possibilities of creating a circular economy within the fashion industry, offering a transformative solution to reduce environmental impact. As we move towards a more responsible and eco-friendly future, loopamid paves the way for a circular revolution in textile production.
